SACAVA
PURPOSE |
WHO
WE ARE |
|
The
purpose of this organization is to protect and safeguard
the general public and the consumers of substance abuse
services through the certification of individuals as
Addictions Counselors, Criminal Justice (Addictions)
Professionals, Clinical Supervisors and Prevention
Specialists at an internationally recognized level of
competency. Additionally, this Organization shall
support the initiatives and legislation that would require
substance abuse services providers to have
competency-based credentials which meet or exceed the
standards of the international Certification and
reciprocity Consortium/Alcohol and other Drug Abuse, Inc.
|
In 1988, SACAVA was founded with
initial grant funding from the Virginia Association of
Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (VAADAC) and the Virginia
Association of Drug and Alcohol Programs (VADAP) along with
additional support from the Department of Mental Health and
Substance Abuse Services. This provided a second tier of
substance abuse counselor's certification in Virginia that would
meet or exceed the certification standards of the Certification Reciprocity
Consortium / Alcoholism and Other Drug Abuse (ICRC/AODA).
The Certification Reciprocity Consortium is a multi-state
organization which exists to promote uniform professional
standards, to protect and to safeguard the general public,
provide quality control for substance abuse counseling
profession, provide counselor reciprocity among member boards,
and to give the profession greater visibility throughout the
United States and internationally.
SACAVA offers several
certifications such as:
With over 550 members, SACAVA
continues to present itself to the Commonwealth of Virginia as a
viable entity in the promotion of competency-based credentialing
for the substance abuse profession.
To maintain the high standards of
the profession and to ensure the continuing awareness and
appropriate incorporation of the new knowledge in the field,
SACAVA requires that all Certified CAC, CCS, CPP, and CCJP be recertified
every two years. In order to be recertified, all certified
members must, along with other requirements, maintain knowledge
of the discipline through documented, on-going, pertinent
education and training within the prior two (2) years.
This education and training must meet or exceed the standards of
the SACAVA for continuing education as described in the
following sections.
SACAVA cordially welcomes and
sincerely appreciates any interest your agency has in providing
continuing education to substance abuse counselors, supervisors,
criminal justice and prevention specialist and other
professionals in the field of chemical dependency and prevention
services.
SACAVA has Education
Providership information in the following pages explaining the
process for being a provider.
It is SACAVA's hope that you will
consider distributing this information to staff who are substance
abuse counselors, prevention specialist, supervisors and other
professionals in the field of chemical dependency and prevention
specialist. SACAVA wishes you would assist us in
encouraging the staff their competencies by seeking
certification and joining a continually growing group of

Engaging the Troublesome Teen: A Mentalization Focused Approach
Three Teaching Goals:
1. Understand the basic concepts involved in Mentalization
2. Be able to compare and contrast Mentalization with Empathy, Therapeutic Alliance, and Theory of Mind
3. Consider how mentalization may be at the basis of many successful treatment approaches
Brief Summary (100 words or less) of Presentation:
To discuss the framework and techniques of a mentalization-based approach designed to engage and develop a therapeutic alliance with adolescents experiencing an adaptive breakdown and/or the emergence of a range of psychiatric disorders. To demonstrate interventions that help break coercive non-mentalizing cycles and impasses that arises between adolescents and others, including their parents and treaters that compromise the development of a therapeutic alliance and contribute to poor outcomes and persistent maladjustment.

BOARD
OF DIRECTORS
NOTES |
The Board of Directors made a motion #01-2008, as of April 4, 2008, that the grace period for expired certifications has been reduced to one (1) from the original motion of five (5) years, from expiration date to still be eligible for re-certifications.
The reason for the motion change was that some members were not renewing their certification in the year as required and held off renewing until the 5 year period or just didn't renewing the certification. This was costing money to the board with postage, extra administrative work, paper and using up unnecessary file space in the office. After searching various boards in the nation affiliated with IC&RC, it was found that no other board had such requirements, as a member could wait up to five (5) years to renew expired certifications. Therefore, the board made the decision to make a motion change effective April 4, 2008.

SACAVA is seeking new board members to be on the Board of
Directors. If you have recommendations for new Board members, please submit them to the nomination committee, or have them submit
[e-mail
sacava_dsl@verizon.net
or fax
(804)-741-2773] their names, qualifications and resumes to the SACAVA office as
soon as possible for review by the nomination committee.
